The northeast quadrant of Houston / Harris County essentially encompasses that area between: Interstate 10 to the south; Interstate 45 to the west (including Aldine, Spring and The Woodlands); southeast Montgomery County to the north (including New Caney and Splendora); and southwest Liberty County to the east (including Dayton and Liberty). Major highways through this area include Beltway 8, FM 1960, US 59, and US 90.
In the heart of this area is Lake Houston and a triangle of communities known as Humble, Kingwood and Atascocita. Recent major developments include Summerwood and Fall Creek. These communities lie within a ten-mile radius of the intersection of US 59 (which runs north and south) and FM 1960 (which runs east and west) and are nestled in the natural beauty that surrounds Lake Houston.
First known as Hunter's Paradise to early settlers, the city of Humble was named after P. S. Humble (pro-nounced "umble"), a settler who operated a ferry across the San Jacinto River in the mid-1800s. It was also the birthplace of Humble Oil Company which several years later became known as Exxon Corporation, and most recently Exxon/Mobil Corporation.
Humble has a population of nearly 20,000 and its residents enjoy life in a small town - downright rural living - that is just minutes away from a major metropolitan center. Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) provides residents with jobs, as does other commercial areas along US 59 and in nearby Kingwood.
Kingwood is four miles north of Humble, just across the San Jacinto River and primarily to the east of US 59. A planned community with close to 70,000 residents, Kingwood was developed in the late 1960s by King Ranch, Inc. and Friendswood Development Co. Kingwood covers about 13,000 acres and is divided into 14 villages, each with its own neighborhood association and each with a varying home price scale ranging from around $75,000 to more than $1 million.
Atascocita is six miles east of Humble on FM 1960. Atascocita (Spanish for "obstruction") is a heavily wooded territory that was once a Spanish government possession and served as a stronghold against the French. Atascocita and its neighboring commmunity, Walden, fringe Lake Houston, a man-made lake. This suburban community offers large, country-club style homes as well as smaller homes in well-planned subdivisions.
Residents of all three areas can take advantage of the fishing and boating opportunities that Lake Houston and the San Jacinto River create.
Humble ISD has an enrollment of almost 20,000 students in its 18 schools, located within 90 square miles.
Proximity to Houston's downtown (22 miles) and Bush Intercontinental Airport (five miles) contributes to the popularity and drawing power of this northeastern quadrant of Harris County. Increased home sales indicate that residents appreciate all the amenities and the peaceful, wood-and-water atmosphere that prevails in Humble, Kingwood and Atascocita.
